Woof, woof! Hi there, hooman friends! My name’s June, and I’m here to share my tail-wagging experience of transitioning to a balanced, meat-based diet. Trust me—it’s a game-changer. My fur is shinier, my energy levels are through the roof, and every meal feels like a celebration (I even do a little happy dance at mealtime)!

Now, I understand that some of your homes are vegetarian—my hooman family is, too. But guess what? They figured out how to make the switch to meat-based meals seamless for me and my brother, J'adore, without compromising their comfort. Let me guide you through it, paw by paw!

Why Meat-Based Diets Make Us Happy (and Healthy)

Did you know we dogs are what the experts call “facultative carnivores”? Big words, I know, but it just means we thrive on a diet rich in animal protein, with a bit of plant-based goodness on the side. Meat gives us the nutrients we need to stay fit and fabulous, like:

  • Amino acids (like taurine) for strong muscles and healthy hearts¹.

  • Healthy fats for energy and a shiny coat¹.

  • Vitamins and minerals for overall health and immunity².

Since switching to meat, my coat gleams like moonlight, and I’ve got energy to chase squirrels all day long (not that I ever catch one). And don’t just take my word for it—if you’re unsure, check out "7 Signs of a Bad Dog Diet" to make sure your pup is getting what they need to thrive.

June’s Tips for a Smooth Transition

1. Take It Slow: The 7-10 Day Rule

Hoomans, don’t shock our tummies with sudden changes! Start by mixing a little bit of meat with our current food and slowly increase the meat portion over 7-10 days³.

My Perfect Transition Plan:

  • Days 1-2: 25% new food, 75% old food.

  • Days 3-4: 50% new food, 50% old food.

  • Days 5-6: 75% new food, 25% old food.

  • Day 7: Woohoo, all meat, all day!

If your furry friend’s tummy acts up (loose stools or discomfort), slow it down. Patience is key, hoomans!

2. Pick the Right Meats

My hoomans started me off with chicken—it’s gentle on my tummy and super yummy⁴. They’ve also added fish (ooh, omega-3s!) and, on special days, mutton. But remember, no spices, salt, or seasoning, please. We like it plain and simple!

3. Balance Is Everything

While meat is the main star, we need a supporting cast for a truly balanced meal:

  • Protein: Meat and fish are non-negotiable for our muscles¹.

  • Fats: Healthy fats like fish oil give us energy and make our coats shine¹.

  • Veggies: Add a little carrot, pumpkin, or spinach (cooked and chopped, please). They help with digestion and provide vitamins⁵.

Carbs: Yes, or no? Honestly, we don’t need carbs to survive, but small portions of easily digestible carbs like rice or sweet potatoes can be a good energy boost, especially if we’re super active⁶.

4. Watch the Portions, please!

We don’t want to end up too skinny or chubby—portion control matters! My hoomans measure my food based on my age, weight, and activity level⁷.

Quick Tip: Treats and snacks should never make up more than 10% of my daily calories. Yes, even if I give you those puppy-dog eyes!

5. Keep Things Clean and Fresh

Handling raw meat is a big deal, especially in vegetarian homes. My hoomans are super careful about this. Here’s their system:

  • They use gloves, masks, and long-handled utensils for handling meat.

  • They’ve set up a separate prep area just for our food.

  • They wash everything thoroughly with natural cleaners after use.

Cleanliness is next to dogliness, after all!

But Hooman, Is This Really Worth It?

Absolutely! Since switching to meat, I’ve:

  • Gained energy to chase my favourite toys.

  • Started doing my happy dance at mealtime (you should see it—it’s adorable).

  • Become the queen of shiny coats. Even J’adore, my brother, wipes his bowl clean every time.

And guess what? My hoomans are still vegetarian! They’ve learned to handle meat with love because they care about my well-being.
